When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews who to trust, the answer cites a handful of sources. Everyone else is invisible. The businesses that get cited are rarely the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones whose expertise is easy to find, easy to verify and easy to quote.
We call the discipline of becoming that kind of source The Citable Standard. It is the four-step method we use at ArcSense: Harvest, Answer, Prove, Amplify.
What does it mean to be cited by AI?
Answer engines assemble responses from sources they judge to be clear and credible. Being cited means your page, your reviews or your name appear as evidence in that response. This practice is called answer engine optimization (AEO), and it sits on top of good search optimization rather than replacing it.
Step 1: Harvest
Every business already holds the raw material: customer results, founder knowledge, reviews, awards, and the questions staff answer every week. Harvesting means building a steady habit of capturing it. This is the hardest step, because it is a process change, not a one-time project.
Step 2: Answer
Publish content that answers the long-tail questions buyers actually ask, in their words. Put it on a website you own, structure it with clear headings and direct answers, and keep a steady cadence. About two substantial articles a month adds up quickly.
Step 3: Prove
Engines look for experience, expertise, authority and trust, often shortened to E-E-A-T. Show it with real author bios and credentials, genuine reviews, awards, case studies, and mentions from credible third parties. Keep your profiles consistent across the web.
Step 4: Amplify
Distribute each piece through paid, earned, shared and owned channels, and show up where AI looks, including LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit and local profiles, with helpful rather than promotional contributions. Then measure leads, rankings and citations, and feed what you learn back into Harvest.
What does The Citable Standard look like in practice?
Orange Grove Animal Hospital combined regular localized content with a rebuilt website and saw sustained lead growth of 211%, along with citations in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. North Carolina Implants and Periodontics doubled online consultation inquiries year over year, with Google Ads turned off since January 2026.
Where should you start?
Start with Harvest. List the ten questions your best customers asked before they hired you, and the three results you are proudest of. That list is your first quarter of content.
